Sat Nam babe Brings Truth To Light In Children's Yoga Clothing

Inner and outer experiences nurture the potential for change. So, when Jennifer Coulombe, a Kundalini yoga teacher desired to make a difference in the world of children’s fashion it was the mantra Sat Nam or “truth is my identity” that bubbled up and inspired her to act. Her manifestation, Sat Nam babe, was born of the aspiration to provide quality mindful yoga clothing for children. To share with parents that less is more, and that quality clothing can be cherished, worn and lovingly passed along. We can make a difference simply by selecting a few high quality pieces of clothing for our children, responsibly sourced and sustainably made. Every purchase is a choice and potentially a contribution to the greater good. 

Created and designed in New York and launched to the public this past Memorial Day weekend, these clothes are adorably functional. Jennifer ran a successful crowdfunding campaign through I Fund Women or IFW in March to test the concept and gather necessary funds. Jennifer remarked that she was both forever indebted to IFW and the incredible opportunity that they provided her along with the reminder to “don’t quit your day job”, because starting a business is hard work and it takes a while before you can turn a profit!

Sat Nam babe is representative of the future of marketing and advertising. Not only did Jennifer crowdfund her starting costs for the company by 75% (coming up with the rest on her own), but she was able to pre-sell approximately 150 pieces of clothing! She has also created a buzz on Instagram showing satisfied customer’s photos of their beaming children that are wearing Sat Nam babe’s merchandise. This has so far saved her the cost of professional photography. 

Jennifer saw much room for growth in the textile industry so her vision is two fold. For one, she is determined to be a force for good in the fashion industry which is rampant with unethical practices and dark themes of crumbling buildings and deplorable labor conditions. Sat Nam babe also employs an environmentally positive approach. The yoga tights are made with recycled plastic bottles. Five plastic bottles on average per pair of adorable pants that are saved from the landfill. Sat Nam babe also handpicks their suppliers and the leggings are made in the USA. Jennifer's main goal is to not turn the highest profit; the social and environmental drivers take as much precedence as profit when making business decisions.

Jennifer is making conscious choices that affect both the manufacturing practices as well as the mindful consumer. “As our littlest kids go through life and are faced with societal pressure, family pressure, etc. may they always be true to themselves and what they were meant to accomplish in this lifetime. In other words, let’s let our kids live their wildest dreams and shoot for the stars.” Though the clothes are more expensive, they are crafted to last. 

Parents, as consumers, have the power to influence and motivate the newest generation to be inclusive, to be confident, and to be yourself. One of the 100% cotton tee shirt’s proclaims, “I’d rather be me!” What better than to teach our children to celebrate our individuality? 

Jennifer sees potential expansion for a slightly older age group or even for adults who seem to be loving the entire line and want the clothes in their size. And though I understand that the adult yoga pant market is saturated, I will continue to wish that Jennifer could make these tribal print harem pants in my size!
