Release Your Inner Mermaid
Do you love the ocean; the feeling of the warm sun on your face, cool breeze in your hair and waves gently rocking you? Imagine the magic of those oceanic sensations combined with yoga and meditation.
We’re blessed to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where any weekend you can choose from hundreds of great yoga and meditation classes taught by gifted and experienced teachers. But if you want to experience the magic of yoga and meditation on a sailboat, there’s only one way to do it- with Yachting Yogis.
Yachting Yogis is a community of yoga and meditation enthusiasts of all levels who enjoy Yoga & Meditation Sails on San Francisco Bay. The group was founded by Capt. Nyle Mameesh, an experienced sea captain and yoga teacher (RYT 200) who conducts yoga and meditation workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and at his center in the Caribbean.
The Yachting Yogis’ journey began several years ago when Capt. Nyle invited a few of his yoga teacher friends to enjoy the day with him sailing San Francisco Bay while doing yoga and meditation. The idea quickly caught on and soon Capt. Nyle was offering sails on a regular basis to yoga teachers and non-yoga teachers alike.
“Sailing is a meditation in and of itself,” says Capt. Nyle.
The yoga and meditation practices are designed to leverage the energy and freedom found aboard a sailboat. For the safety of and accessibility by yoga practitioners of all levels, the yoga practice consists mainly of low center of gravity poses. However, with some advanced yoga practitioners Capt. Nyle has also led AcroYoga, inversion and other highly technical balance practices on the yacht. The idea is to welcome all levels- from complete beginners to yoga masters- so that all can experience the joy of yoga aboard a sailboat.
The unique and powerful meditation practiced aboard the yacht was developed by Capt. Nyle who named it YogaHydra. YogaHydra harnesses the combined energies of the sun, wind and waves to create deeper levels of relaxation, stress relief and healing than can be found in a studio setting. Practitioners have described meditating while lying on the deck of the yacht, swaddled in warm yoga blankets and gently rocking with the waves like a return to the womb.
The deep levels of relaxation experienced during YogaHydra can also be leveraged for insight, creative breakthroughs, goal achievement and bliss. However, the focus of the meditation practiced on the yacht is to break the stress cycle and create space for the body to relax and heal. “Think of it as a mini yoga retreat,” says Capt. Nyle, “a relaxing, healing and and fun day on the Bay, unplugged from technology and all your shoreside worries and responsibilities. The experience is completely rejuvenating. No one leaves the yacht unchanged.”
After yoga and meditation, the crew enjoys a delicious lunch, champagne and wine as they sail, relax, socialize and revel in the natural beauty of San Francisco Bay.
“Sailing is a metaphor for life,” says Capt. Nyle, “you don’t control the wind, but you can control your sails.” Yachting Yogis helps you start taking control of your sails.
