The Relaxation Pose That Also Reenergizes You
Legs up the wall, one of my favorite yoga poses, is a quick and easy way to calm the nervous system and shift your energy! In fact, this pose can even give you energy. Read on to learn more about this simple, yet deeply healing pose.
I learned about this pose in my first yoga teacher training as the “everything pose.” It is also sometimes referred to as the “jet lag pose.” Doing this for 10 minutes a day for 10 days before you travel and then continue it as your arrive in your destination. I have tried it and have had success!!!!
The Benefits
One of my teachers said that if you practice this pose for 10 minutes a day, you will never get sick because it helps calm and balance the nervous system, which is so essential for healing. This pose also brings us into our parasympathetic nervous system state, which helps to relieve stress and anxiety.
Legs up the wall pose is relaxing, relieves stress, calms the nervous system, refreshes the legs, gives blood circulation a gentle boost, and is even know to alleviate headaches and lower back pain. It can also boost our energy!
The cool thing about this pose is that it can be done anywhere: In your bed, on the floor, outside with legs up a tree... I have done it in airports and even on a few airplanes when traveling internationally!
Get into the Pose
Here are a few options for getting into the pose:
1. Put a pillow or bolster under the lower back.
2. If hamstrings are super tight you can be further away from the wall or you can bend your knees 90 degrees
3. You can do it with badha konasana legs or wide legs.
4. If you have a small yoga sandbag, you can also place it on your feet.
I recommend doing legs up the wall for 10 minutes at a time if possible.
Legs Up the Wall Challenge
Take on the challenge of doing it for a full week for 10 minutes a day and see how you feel!
Also great to do when you are feeling super tired! You will find it gives you a boost of energy. Way more healing than a cup of coffee.
