DAYBREAKER: Hip Hop Edition!

DAYBREAKER: Hip Hop Edition!

By Patricia Gums

Daybreaker’s mission is an easy one to get behind: It's about dancing before the day breaks with people we love and cultivating a community that values camaraderie, self-expression, wellness, intimacy and mischief. It is about going to work with our brows slightly dewed from moving our bodies with reckless abandon, sans alcohol, but with so much spirit. It's a movement that will start your day off unlike anything else.

Daybreaker was started in New York City and the idea is to get people out of bed and on the dance floor. They have expanded in just a few short years and they are now currently hosting events in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Chicago, Montreal, Shanghai and of course NYC.

My three favorite things from the Daybreaker Hip Hop Edition:

  • Your workout is completed before 9am. The most recent Daybreaker included one hour of yoga sculpt followed by two hours of dancing. And the best part: this is all while you are hanging out with your friends, socializing and dressed up in some ridiculous outfit. Not too shabby - all before the work day! This was my first time taking yoga sculpt and I loved it! The class was taught by Aubrey Terrazas, and she infused aerobics and sculpt elements within a vinyasa flow. It was quite strenuous but really energizing.
  • No hangover. The idea of getting low with it and blowing the whistle at 7am in da' club without any alcohol or drugs may seem completely foreign or ludicrous to you. However, it is possible and much appreciated by people who need to get s#%t done, are in recovery or are tired of sloppy nights, but still want to go out and have fun. Sober events, festivals and spaces are popping up all over the Bay Area and beyond and seem to be on the rise. Check out Bhakti Fest, The Center SF, or Sound Meditation SF for other mindful events.
  • It's really fun! While dancing for two hours may seem like a stretch, the Daybreaker team has surprises built in to entertain you along the way. Expect full body costumes (this IS San Francisco after all, capital of adult dress up), huge light up jelly fish bobbing by, confetti cannons, ice cube delivery to parched dancers, life instruments, spontaneous break dancing, Big Freedia-esque live entertainers and the colorful outfits on the other 500 early morning risers. And then there was Pam the Funkstress, who has opened up for Prince (RIP) and is a legend herself; she was phenomenal and such a treat to get down too.

“At Daybreaker, we dance our faces off before work and feel gloriously healthy while doing so. We gather in community to participate in something greater than ourselves. Daybreaker is about choosing to live life differently, choosing to be happy, and choosing to pursue the best versions of ourselves. See you on the dance floor.” Mission accomplished!
